Choral
Composer: | Johann Sebastian Bach
Voicing: | Tenor Solo/Choir or SATB Organ or Keyboard
Words: | The second verse of a chorale written by Philipp Nicolai. (Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme). |
Das Herz tut ihr vor Freuden springen,
Sie wachet und steht eilend auf.
Ihr Freund kommt vom Himmel prächtig,
Von Gnaden stark, von Wahrheit mächtig;
Ihr Licht wird hell, ihr Stern geht auf.
Nun komm, du werte Kron,
Herr Jesu, Gottes Sohn!
Hosianna!
Wir folgen all zum Freudensaal
Und halten mit das Abendmahl.Zion hört die Wächter singen,
English
Zion hears her watchmen’s voices,
Their gladdening cry her soul rejoices
The shadows of her night depart.
In his might her Lord appeareth,
His word of grace and truth she heareth,
The day star riseth in her heart.
O come, in splendour bright,
Lord Jesu, Light of Light!
Hosianna!
We follow thee, thy joy to see,
Where everlasting bliss shall be.
Bach Cantata BWV 140 by J. S. Bach, it is written to be sung by a tenor voice or by the tenor section of a choir. Choirs tend to perform this in various ways, by selecting another voice, or by having the whole choir sing in unison. The 2nd version here is arranged for a four part choir. While Bach did not intend this, it is included in this collection.
