English
Lo, how a rose e’er blooming, from tender stem hath sprung.Of Jesse’s lineage coming, as men of old have sung;it came, a flow’ret bright, amid the cold of winter,when halfspent was the night.Isaiah ’twas foretold it, the Rose I have in mind,with Mary we behold it, the virgin mother kind;to show God's love aright, She bore to us a Saviour,when halfspent was the night.This Flow’r whose fragrance tender with sweetness fills the air,dispels with glorious splendour the darkness ev’rywhere.True Man, yet very God; from sin and death He saves usand lightens ev’ry load.
Alternative verse 1
Behold, a Branch is growing of loveliest form and grace,
as prophets sung, foreknowing; it springs from Jesse’s race
and bears one little Flow’r in midst of coldest winter,
at deepest midnight hour.
Alternative Verse 2
Additional Verse 5Isaiah hath foretold it in words of promise sure,and Mary's arms enfold it, a virgin meek and pure.Thro’ God's eternal will this Child to her is givenat midnight calm and still.
O Saviour, Child of Mary, who felt our human woe;
O Saviour, King of Glory, who dost our weakness know,
bring us at length we pray, to the bright courts of Heaven
and to the endless day.
